Reconstruction2024 FUNCTIONAL OBJECTS
In the 1920s the philosopher
Ludwig Wittgenstein designed a
handle to accommodate the mullions
in his sister’s home. To this day, a
lever with an offset in the beginning
of the handle grip – to avoid the
hand getting caught between the
hardware and the door frame – is the
most common solution to narrow
stile doors.
Accurate’s narrow stile door lever
offered a function-first solution to
the problem of insufficient hand
space, with little mind to aesthetics.
The end product was noticeably a
makeshift modification of an earlier
design, at the expense of visual
coherence.
I resdesigned the lever so every
part played a harmonious role.
Offset to tip form an organic whole.

The production of these levers
faced a challenge from the curvature
and limitation of CNC machining.
Working alongside engineers and
machinists, we found the most
efficient way to drill them from a
solid block of aluminium, leaving
support material that would later
be refined down from all angles.
